VPS Advocacy Alert!!
In response to S193 from VT legislative session in 2026, DMH is collaborating with the departments of Health, Corrections, Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living, and Health on a Forensic Facility. That is a place (co-located within one men’s prison and the women’s prison) where individuals will be sent when they have committed a crime but found not competent to stand trial. The purpose of this space is for competency restoration, through education about the court process, psychiatric treatment, groups, potentially medications, and supports for complicating factors like disability or substance use. The space will have the ability to use emergency involuntary procedures if needed. There will be oversight of the facilities and the programs themselves from all the shared departments in a unified process. A medical director position will be hired for the Agency of Human Services to oversee this facility.
There is a public meeting on Wednesday, August 26 from 12-2pm if anyone would like to give feedback about this Rule or the facility’s conceptualization.
